Westerly Yacht - Osmosis Treatment
- Services: GRP and Gelcoat | Paints & Varnishes
A Westerly yacht arrived at Trouts Boatyard requiring a full osmosis treatment to ensure it remained seaworthy. The process began with a gel peel and sandblast to remove the affected layers and expose the underlying structure. Moisture readings were then taken across the entire hull, and the yacht was allowed to dry fully before any further osmosis work commenced.
While the yacht was with us, several other essential repairs and treatments were undertaken:
Keel Removal and Resealing – Both keels were leaking and had to be removed. Once detached, they were thoroughly cleaned, treated with epoxy, and resealed. After curing, they were primed and refitted to the hull.
Epoxy Sheathing and Priming – The hull was sheaved with epoxy and cloth, providing strength and a protective barrier. This was followed by six coats of epoxy primer to complete the osmosis treatment.
Surface Preparation – The starboard side was epoxy filled, and the port side was sanded to prepare the surfaces for finishing.
Once all structural and protective work was complete, the yacht was finished with new vinyl logos and a Coppercoat bottom, giving it a clean, long-lasting, and highly functional final appearance.
